The hawk is concentrating on the slain Blue Jay.
The hawk is an awesome bird of prey. The hawk you see in these pictures decided to attack a Blue Jay that was ground feeding under the bird feeders in our backyard. My wife saw the hawk standing on top of the Blue Jay, feathers everywhere and ran to me hoping I'd come look. I grabbed my digital camera and started snapping away. The hawk's ears must be very sharp, as soon as I started taking pictures, the hawk became quite uneasy, you may notice its head in different positions in the pictures below. Seemingly, it sensed danger with my camera pointing its way and took flight so fast I couldn't even see the Blue Jay being carried off with him. Unfortunately from my angle through the kitchen window, I could not get a good shot of the hawk's face when it appeared to be looking in my direction. Probably fortunate for us all, I do not have a good zoom feature on my camera so my pictures are not too close to the gruesome slaying. I hope you enjoy these photos, it's not everyday one gets to see a bird of prey in action this close and totally in the wild. Nature at it's most, well, natural.
The hawk senses me and looks my way...
The hawk looking around...
The hawk looking around...
The hawk looking around...
One last look before it takes off with its prey.
